Córdoba is the twelfth mos populous city in the Nation and fortunately there are still plenty, although not all, of stars to gaze at every night. However, Córdoba lies right next to the intimate and monumental mountains of Sierra Morena. Seneca used to say that “the distance to the stars is always the same”; what this philosopher forgot to add was that progress and light will bright to the point of blinding the night to anything else but electrical frenzy. So long starry night!
Fortunately the mountains serve as a safe place for the night’s sky and all its beings, and it is only minutes away from the city. It is not so hard to drive up and look up with joy, perhaps thinking of just how big our ego must have gotten with time when nowadays we hardly ever miss gazing at the stars.
Also the Pedroches Valley is since 2016 a Reserva Starlight. This new protected natural habitats act as a firm commitment towards the safeguard of the quality of our starry night’s skies. It is an global effort to preserve its quality in regards to scientific, cultural or/and aesthetic uses. Starlight Touristic Destinations are fantastic places that offer the perfect material conditions to better study and contemplate the skies of this great earth at night for they are completely isolated and protected from any sort of light pollution.
Where can we see our stars?
The Pedroches Valley has numerous observation points of which we should point out the mountain parks, shrine and old mines located all over the province, throughout the 17 municipal districts such as Cardeña, Conquista, Villanueva de Córdoba, El Guijo, Santa Eufemia, El Viso, Villaralto, Alcaracejos, Torrecampo, Añora, Pozoblanco, Pedroche, Dos Torres, Hinojosa del Duque, Fuente la Lancha, Villanueva del Duque y Belalcázar.
